London's West End Theatre District

West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre staged in the large theatres of London's 'Theatreland,' the West End.  Along with New York's Broadway theatre, West End theatre is usually considered to represent the best commercial theatre in the English speaking world.  Total attendances first surpassed 12 million in 2002 and 13 million in 2007, setting a new record for the West End. Since the late 1990s there has been an increase in the number of famous screen actors on the London stage, and some of the world's best actors and actresses have learned their trade in London theatres, including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Ian McKellen, Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud.

The best London theatres are located in the heart of the West End of Central London, between The Strand to the south, Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the west, and Kingsway to the east. Prominent theatre streets include Drury Lane, Shaftesbury Avenue, and The Strand.  The best London theatre shows are all available on this website.
